The Parking Project was an exploration of the interaction design process. It was an exploration of the place of new technologies in a parking system, particularly in user feedback and messaging. The project culminated in the production of a recommendations document, where findings were presented and designs analyzed.

Details

One of my goals for this project was that whatever recommendations were made should be based in technical reality. It's really easy to create things when making wild assumptions about the technical implementation and the availability of data. So, a large part of my research was in determining what the possible technical framework for my recommendations would be. For more information, go ahead and read the paper!

The Simulator

As a related project, I created a simulator in Flash for the example signage from the recommendations document. I simulated data for a period of a week, where the number of spots for each spot type (E,A,B) where recorded for each hour. The simulator then called for that data, extrapolated between the previous and next hour, then fudged a little for variation. It then presented that data in 2 different contexts: a large sign outside of a parking garage, and a mobile phone. Cool, you say. Where is it! Well, the data was lost due to a miscommunication, and I haven't recreated it yet. As soon as I do, I'll put it up!
